7 Guidelines for Performance Measurement using Metrics in Dashboard.

Performance metrics in dashboard are critical tools for guiding, monitoring or implementing. Most of the firms fail in measuring because they use wrong metrics or broad metrics. Most of the successful firms align their metrics with their strategies.

Budget is another important tool that has to be considered. Based on that the goals are set, resources are allocated and performance is measured too. For correct measurement, budget should reflect the strategy that is it should provide enough guidance as the firms grow more complex and sophisticated. Strategic measures are taken by many companies which are linked to the strategies the firm articulates and measure performance both outside and inside the firm, relative to competitors and customers.

Different performance measures for different times have to be used by the firms considering where they stand and what their position is. For successful implementation of the strategies in the dynamic environment, combinations of metrics are to be used.

SEVEN GUIDELINES FOR PERFORMANCE MEASURE METRICS:

Measure what is important –the main focus should be on key strategies like focus, satisfaction, etc. it is also important that the metrics do reflect what competitors are doing, customer satisfaction. There should be a regular check to know whether any actions are being taken based on the metrics or not. Most importantly metrics should be clear and simple. Transparency of metrics is very important so that they are easily understandable and communicated to others.

Align your metrics with your key stakeholders’ metrics –it is necessary that the metrics should align with the stakeholders’ metrics to have a healthy relation with them. Every firm needs to understand what the stakeholders expect from them and based on that metrics are to be created. In this way both the firm and stakeholders can achieve their broader strategic goals.

Translate qualitative targets to quantitative metrics –it will help for the managers to set quantifiable targets and based on that track the performance. It will be easier to set and measure when they are quantifiable.

Deploy early warning systems –as the environment changes it is necessary to respond to it as quickly as possible. A firm should not always focus on long term goals but also on short term and immediate goals for better development and progress.

Establish a common language –even though metrics are simple and clear yet same words are interpreted differently. The words exact meanings had to be clearly defined for better understanding and transparency. As these metrics are communicated to the employees too they should be in simple language and also the link between the metrics and organization’s goals and strategies are also to be defined properly.

Deploy a balanced portfolio of metrics –there should be a balance between different combinations of metrics. Healthy performance metrics include both short-term and long term metrics. Focus should not focus only on short or long, both should be considered. The lifespan of the strategy should be seen and based on that metrics are to be created for the life time of the strategy.

Align metrics with strategy –good metrics facilitate implementation of strategy. Once strategy has been developed, firms calibrate their performance management systems to track and reward strategic behavior. Rewarded employees will be more encouraged on meeting their strategic targets.

For organizations to tune their performance measurement systems they need to encourage strategic focus and behavior, simplify the challenges and communicate both positive and negative results and energize the teams.

Simple 9-Do's to Crack an Interview.

Simple tips which help you out to perform well in an Interview.  Small things can make huge difference, which can result fruitful at short run as well as long run.

PREPARE FOR THE BIG QUESTION
The most frequently asked question is "Tell me about yourself". The wrong answer is, "What do you want to know?" This tell the prospective employer you're unprepared for the interview.

WATCH YOUR WORDS AND TONE
Real life is like high school.  Get ready to be judged on popularity.  Recognize that how you say things is often more important that what you say.  Above all don't tell people what's "wrong" with them.

TURN A NEGATIVE INTO A POSITIVE
Instead of saying, "No, I've never don't that" and feeling miserable afterwards, try, "You know, I haven't had the opportunity to do that before but have always wanted to learn.  Would I be able to here?"

GO TRADITIONAL
What is the new look for interviewing? The old rule remains true: dark suit with plain shirt or blouse.  You'd be surprised how many candidates get this wrong.

DO LIKE A BOY SCOUT
A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.  Need we say more?

WRITE A CAN DO RESUME
A good resume advertises not what you've done but what you can do for your future employer.

ITS NOT OVER IT'S OVER
Write a follow-up note when you don't get the job.  this is so unusual that you'll stand out, and perhaps the interviewer will know of other opportunities and recommend you.

QUITE GROVELING
Consider giving up manipulation entirely.  Flattery, appeasement, and old-fashioned boot licking are especially poisonous to a relationship.

GET WITH THE GRATITUDE
Thank you notes are must. E-mail is fine, but be specific what excited you about the opportunity, how you can hit the ground running, and what impact you can make immediately.

Role of Investment Bankers in Merger and Acquisition.

Investment banker plays an Important role in M&A.  They help the merging companies in many ways like.

  • They help in organising mergers.
  • They help target companies to develop and implement defensive tactics.
  • They help in valuing the target company.
  • They help in financing mergers and,
  • They invest in stock of firms which are likely to merge.

Investment bankers gain huge profits through these merger related activities.

  1. Organizing Mergers: Suppose steel manufacturers interested in merging with one of its suppliers such as iron or coal mining firm.  Investment bankers help steel manufactures to acquire its suppliers.
  2. Developing Defensive Tactics: In order to avoid takeover by big firms, a target firm make use of Investment banking firm and a law firm.  Some of the defensive strategies are Golden parachutes, Poison pills, white square, white Knights etc.
  3. Establishing a Fair Value.
  4. Financing Mergers: If acquiring firms do not have enough fund of cash, then there is need for searching source of funds. (FYI: Earlier in 1980, Junk bonds were the only source for financing mergers and the primary developer for those were Drekel Burnham Lambert)
  5. Arbitrage Operations: Here it refers to buying and selling of securities in different markets at different prices and taking risk free return.

Acquisition of Plant/Unit - Corporate Restructuring

As corporate restructuring is developing, purchase and sale of divisions or plants is becoming common in present conditions. A company can purchase an asset or it can divestiture its asset depending on the need.

Some important examples of purchase of division/plant in recent past years are.

  1. Cement plant of TISCO(A plant is situated in East Madhya Pradesh and the slag cement grinding facility is located in southern Bihar) is purchased by Lafarge Cement India.
  2. SRF Limited become the owner of nylon tyre cord division of CEAT.
  3. Heinz India limited purchased the foods division of Glaxo India Limited.
  4. Hindustan Sanitaryware Industries Limited(HSIL) bought the Chrome Fitting bathroom division at Bhiwadi, of Havells Group India limited as a part of its diversify portfolio strategy.

Economic Value Added(EVA) Approach - Features, Advantages.

In present scenario the Economic Value Added(EVA) is becoming popular.

Economic Value Added definition:
EVA (Economic Value Added) is basically the excess amount left on after making a proper charge for the capital invested in the business.  It different ways economic value added calculation can be done. They are,

Different types of Economic Value Added (EVA) Formula are:

1. EVA = NOPAT - C* x CAPITAL.
2. EVA = CAPITAL (r-c*)
3.EVA = [PAT + INT (1-t)] - C* CAPITAL
4.EVA = PAT- Kc EQUITY

Where,
NOPAT = Net Operating Profit After Tax.
C*= Cost of Capital
CAPITAL= Economic book value of the capital invested in the firm.
r= return on capital (NOPAT/CAPITAL)
PAT=Profit After Tax.
INT+ interest expense of the firm.
t=Marginal tax rate of the firm.
Kc= Cost of equity.
EQUITY= Equity utilized in the firm.

Important Features and Advantages of EVA Approach:

  • It acts as performance measure which is linked to share holder value creation in all directions.
  • It is useful in providing business knowledge to everyone.
  • It is an efficient method for communicating to investors.
  • It transforms the accounting information into economic quality which can be easily understood by non financial managers.
  • It is useful in evaluating Net Present Value(NPV) of projects in capital budgeting which is contradictory to IRR.
  • Instead of writing the value of firm in terms of discounted cash flow, it can be expressed in terms of EVA of projects.

FYI: This approach was developed by Stern Stewart & Co, and later with different names like Peter Drucker referred it as "measure of total factor productivity",  feature magazine as "today's hottest financial idea and getting hotter"
