A Simple Answer for Tell Me About Yourself?

Irrespective of any interview, the very first question is Say About Yourself? To tell something about yourself is that really a big deal, Yes it is.  If it is really simple, interviewers would have gone for next common question to start the conversation, which they didn't so far.

My Simple Interview mantra #1 to score: "Tell only those things, what an interviewer want to listen from you".

I would like to share a "day of my campus interview experience". I suggest you to always do some basic ground work on the profile, company, possibly the interviewer (if you know anything) or the kind of process they do if you have time and interest. If not just be active and be SMART! (I often hear from HR professional and other counterpart that in this present competitive market situation the fresher or even experienced candidate required spoon feeding, and zeal to learn is very low). Now scoring a point is simple, as you know what is the requirement and what exactly you have to project).

Well the profile which I have applied requires someone with very good writing, reading, and communication skills along with basic fundamental subject knowledge, which more or less every profile demand.

Just before an hour of interview I did few tweaks:

  1. Added few notes and appointments in my mobile scheduler.
  2. Made sure I have written all my strengths in the negative or weakness section of the interview form and there are many weakness over strength with a purpose.
  3. Ensured that my resume is Short and Simple and doesn't have anything which I'm going to answer the 'Tell me about yourself question' and highlighted those words which will prompt the interviewer to know about it.
  4. And of course a real cum fabricated story to support my strengths. ( remember if the number of weaknesses mentioned are more than strengths its very oblivious that the emphasis on the weakness, and you know that those are your strengths in fact and you have a supporting story/idea on it).
  5. If you are experienced. ( You have already scored a point, all required is to do is, prove your experience).
  6. Last but not the least, PREPARED A SPEECH TO ANSWER TWO QUESTIONS, one TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF and two, WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU?

My Simple answer for TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF was, My name is XXX. I'm a permanent resident of XYZ City and did all my schooling in XYZ City. I'm learned basics of Commerce from my Intermediate education and pursued the same in graduation and later in my master's education and I performed fairly in grades too.  Post my graduation I got an opportunity to work for one of the leading MNC as an "ABC role", which has given me a great platform to know about the working culture and different dynamics of the work. Later I relieved from the company and pursued my masters and now I'm here in find of another opportunity which I am very comfortable .

Why I projected in such way?

  •  " permanent resident" - because the profile requires someone for local  and doesn't give priority for relocation as it is immediate joining position.
  • Emphasis on Commerce: Its requires purely someone from commerce background through out the career with better grades.
  • Job description said, "Experience is plus".
  • I had an irrelevant experience, so my emphasis was on ready to adopt the new dynamics and culture of work.
  • and finally "I am very comfortable"; driving the next question, Comfortable? How? The profile required someone very good in Writing, Reading and Communication, which you say that its your weakness?

Now this question was prompted by me and I have got the answer for it too.

I mentioned it in my weakness because I started learning and I'm working on it and still in short for proficiency yet. The question raises is, its your Weakness and you are aiming for being Proficient? What are you dong to overcome?
Yes, I have started writing articles as a freelancer and newsletter for college articles and started blogging recently too. (Point scored, Blogging!! what is that all about)

Interview mantra #2: "Take the interview discussion the way you want to take it".

Weakness #2: Poor at Scheduling / Procrastinating / Postponing.
Here comes those notes/appointment loaded in mobile as response how you are overcoming it.

After few more such goals, finally comes WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU?

Simple, I'm can very confidently say that I take this role as an challenge which is in line with both my personal and professional goals. With my  little proven records and the capabilities I hold I seamlessly perform and meet the requirements and will try to give a value addition to the business.

This is just one of my experiences, which may or may not go in line with your world of facing interview.  If you can post your questions or any difficulties you are facing, we may help out on very customized answers.

Oil and Gas
The Major Oil players in India are Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL), Indian Oil Corp (IOC), and Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL). These companies has started threatening the government to increased the prices of petrol.

Why?
Because, the current crude oil as on April 2012 is trading at $121.3 per barrel. Huge losses are being incurred/accrued in the books of these companies has they are selling the petrol below the market prices.
So currently Rs.8-Rs.10/- is the loss on per liter of petrol sold. and Rs.14 on diesel and of course a huge pie  on LPG gas Cylinder of Rs.570/each lpg cylinder.

Solution for Rise in Petrol Prices:
Now the States levied VAT or Sales tax, are ranging in between from 15 to 33 per cent (ie.,Rs.10-Rs.19/liter is being paid only as taxes), this has to be reduced so that the pressure will not be on the consumer by hiking the prices again. Goa has already implemented it, by removing the tax on petrol.

Tell me about yourself.
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses?
Do a simple analysis about yourself, and figure out what are you strength first. Post those as weakness, this is the strategic move. Always use you strength as weakness, for example, I say writing is my weakness, even for a job which need Writing reports is the highest preferred skill. You have cracked half the interview.

Why do you want this job?
Never be desperate and at the same time not overconfident, in fact be desperately determined.

Should I Ask Questions in Interview? Why? What?

Almost every Interview has a very common question asking, "DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?"

Some candidates think that when this question is asked, the interview is about to wrap up. You may be wrong, the question really signals the start of the main course, earlier question can turn to be just a starter/appetizer.  Every Interviewer would like the Job seeker to ask few intelligent questions, and if you don't ask questions, you leave these impressions:
  • You think the job is unimportant.
  • You are uncomfortable asserting yourself.
  • You are not intelligent.
  • You are easily intimidated.
  • You are boring.
The very common question arises, Why Should I ask question in an Interview? or What questions should I ask in a Interview?
Remember, you have to stand out of the herd, who are almost very much similar with talent. "Do Something Different."  Asking just the right questions is your chance to demonstrate that you are the best candidate for the job by communicating the different impressions.

Interest: You have taken the trouble to investigate the job.
Intelligence: You really understand the requirements of the job.
Confidence: You have everything it takes to do the job.
Personal appeal: You are the type of person who will fit in well.
Assertiveness: You ask for the job.

Always remember, "The question you ask, and how you ask them, do as much to differentiate you from the competition."

Interview Question: What is your Greatest Achievement and Strength?

Another sample interview question followed by Tell me about yourself in an interview, is what do you think that is your greater achievement till date? or What is you strengths?

These job interview question is asked to know what is the best you have did till now or what are you capable to do the best for the company or how your have overcame obstacles in life. It can be very generic or your previous office experience.

Examples of question like what is your greatest accomplishments? you can say is.

Prior job/office experience achievement:
Being asked to manage the department I currently run, has been extremely significant for me.  I had only been working there for two years and I had assumed that some with more experience than me would be asked.  I had worked hard and put a lot of energy into developing and expanding our customer base.  But I had not anticipated a reward coming quite so soon.  the real achievement for me is that I have managed to do this and avoid resentment from other staff who might have assumed hat they would be asked to do the job.

General/Personal life achievement:
To be honest - giving up smoking.  I never thought I could do it and I had dozens of attempts that ended in failure.  It isn't just the fact that I don't smoke any more,  I have gained so much personal insight and I deal with potentially stressful situation at work so much more effectively now.  I fell more energetic, more mentally alert and far calmer than I ever did before.

When you are asked to list down you strengths:
General Examples are greatest strength
Dealing with people, keeping calm, where people around me are agitated.
Finding imaginative solutions I have come up with new office deign.
I also developed motivation courses to junior staff because of huge employee turnover.

Best Answers for Tell Me Something About Yourself: Interview Question

If you have attended any interview, you would encounter the first question ie., Tell Me About Yourself?. Are you wondering what is the best answer for this question? Well to be very frank there is no predetermined answer for this question. But in simple, you are expected to tell something new and which is not there in the resume already.

Always answer which grabs the interviewer attention, let that be even negative also, don't worry, because you are creating some impression rather going numb. Later on going you can change the interviewer impression if you created a negative impression earlier. There are few examples I provided for this question.

Here there are few more answers which can create an impression in the interview.
  • Perhaps you should begin by telling you why you have chosen to apply for this job at this stage in the career and outline how the experience in your current and previous jobs related to the post you applied for.
  • You can start by telling something about the course you have completed, what you have gained form it and how it links with your plans for the future.
  • May be even you should start by telling one or two of the more unusual things you did, and what you think you have learned from it and what you have to offer to this post. (make sure the unusual things should be particular to work projects, experience or other interest you got)
  • You can even begin by describing the sort of person you are, or at least how friends and colleagues would describe you and a supporting point of your behavior to those description.
The reason why it is difficult to answer this question is, because you are unsure what to include, where to begin, how long to go on, etcetra.

A another common question, especially in the campus placement interview. Aside academics, what else did you got a chance to learn in the college? or a straight forward question, List 5 learning from the college. Do not blabber saying dedication, punctuality, etc vaguely. Another common answer, but answer in the same way.

  • Number 1: Thanks for my lecturers, who has given me an opportunity to work on various out of campus research project, from which I could able to learn various things like scheduling my time with academic and non-academic work.
  • Number 2: Got an chance to volunteer in college fest, where i was involved in finance/designing/operation/hospitality/promotion committee and learned these things.

Simple 9-Do's to Crack an Interview.

Simple tips which help you out to perform well in an Interview.  Small things can make huge difference, which can result fruitful at short run as well as long run.

PREPARE FOR THE BIG QUESTION
The most frequently asked question is "Tell me about yourself". The wrong answer is, "What do you want to know?" This tell the prospective employer you're unprepared for the interview.

WATCH YOUR WORDS AND TONE
Real life is like high school.  Get ready to be judged on popularity.  Recognize that how you say things is often more important that what you say.  Above all don't tell people what's "wrong" with them.

TURN A NEGATIVE INTO A POSITIVE
Instead of saying, "No, I've never don't that" and feeling miserable afterwards, try, "You know, I haven't had the opportunity to do that before but have always wanted to learn.  Would I be able to here?"

GO TRADITIONAL
What is the new look for interviewing? The old rule remains true: dark suit with plain shirt or blouse.  You'd be surprised how many candidates get this wrong.

DO LIKE A BOY SCOUT
A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.  Need we say more?

WRITE A CAN DO RESUME
A good resume advertises not what you've done but what you can do for your future employer.

ITS NOT OVER IT'S OVER
Write a follow-up note when you don't get the job.  this is so unusual that you'll stand out, and perhaps the interviewer will know of other opportunities and recommend you.

QUITE GROVELING
Consider giving up manipulation entirely.  Flattery, appeasement, and old-fashioned boot licking are especially poisonous to a relationship.

GET WITH THE GRATITUDE
Thank you notes are must. E-mail is fine, but be specific what excited you about the opportunity, how you can hit the ground running, and what impact you can make immediately.

'Can you tell me more about how you get the best out of your team?'

'I believe that people work best when they're given responsibility.  For example, we had a problem meeting sales targets in the [company name] area.  Rather than just harassing the team to get better results, I put it to them as a group problem and asked them to come up with a workable solution.  After a couple of brainstorming sessions, they came up with a member-get-a-member scheme based on the upcoming festival.  They were responsible for implementing it while I saw they had the back-up needed from Head Office.  Sales increased by 40percent over the festival, and subsequently steadied to 22percent, well within target.'
